At Capital on Tap, we’re dedicated to empowering small businesses by providing the tools and support they need to thrive. Our business credit card is designed to make running a business faster, simpler, and more rewarding.
In line with our mission, we are also committed to nurturing the next generation of sales talent through our Sales Academy. Whether you’re just starting your career journey or looking to transition into sales, our programme is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the dynamic world of business development.
As we gear up to launch the third version of our Sales Academy, we want to take a moment to explore what a day in the life of a Junior BDM looks like and hear from some of our previous Junior BDMs.
A day in the life of a junior business development manager
Imagine a day where every call could lead to a new opportunity. As a Junior BDM, your role revolves around identifying new business prospects across diverse industries - whether it’s beauty, gaming, music, or any field that piques your interest. You’ll engage with decision-makers, building relationships and uncovering potential partnerships that could transform businesses.
Comprehensive training and support
Our Academy isn’t just about making calls; it’s about mastering the full sales cycle. You’ll receive hands-on training and coaching sessions covering everything from managing accounts to understanding financial structures. Plus, you’ll interact with teams across the company, gaining insights into how a fast-growth FinTech operates.
5-star account management
You will regularly catch up with existing customers through phone calls and emails, learning more about their businesses and helping them achieve maximum rewards!
Buddy meetings
With so much learning, it can get overwhelming. We ensure you have frequent one-on-one meetings with your buddy - a fellow sales colleague assigned to you in the business - and manager, allowing you to ask questions and receive meaningful feedback to help you develop.
Weekly team meetings
During team meetings, the Academy Sales Manager shares updates on team performance, aligns priorities, and provides the latest business updates.
Sales analytics
You will be taught to elevate your expertise in maintaining an up-to-date pipeline, utilising various tech platforms to become a data wizard and transform your sales approach.
Social activities
To wrap up the day, the team often gathers for drinks or a meal to celebrate successes. Some of our activities to date include drag shows, pub quizzes, paint and sips, and theme parks!
Real stories, real success
Academy Manager Emma says “This really is a fantastic opportunity for those who have not had any sales experience but hold the soft skills to thrive in this environment. My advice would be to embrace and trust the process; there will be times when it is challenging, but the potential rewards really outweigh the tough days.”
Rhian, Tayla, and Isaac are just a few of our Academy graduates who started with little to no sales experience and are now thriving in their roles. They’ve gained invaluable skills, from managing client pipelines to confidently engaging with high-level decision-makers.
Rhian
After leaving college, I started work in a call centre where part of my job was to up-sell to current customers. This gave me my first taste of sales, and it was the part of the role I enjoyed the most. I started to look at sales-specific jobs, but they all required prior experience. I came across the advert for Capital on Tap and decided that this was my next step.
I attended the assessment day, and this helped me realise Capital on Tap was the place for me! The assessment day did not feel as if you were being interviewed, and there was no stress of having to answer your usual interview questions—they just wanted to get to know you and your personality.
Tayla
I think the academy made me more resilient. It taught me to bounce back quickly after not getting the result I wanted. You’ve got to be able to brush yourself off quite quickly if a company falls through or a call doesn’t go as you hoped.
I’m also a lot more disciplined since starting the academy. Since no one can force you to get on the phone and start speaking to people, it’s completely in your hands if you’re successful or not.
Isaac
Since joining Capital on Tap, I've gained all manner of sales skills. I can create and manage a pipeline of accounts from multiple industries, manage my own time, understand financial accounts, and have a general knowledge of how businesses and their structures operate.
If you had asked me last year if I would be speaking to directors and owners of multi-million-pound companies, I would have said you were having a laugh!
Coming up to one year at Capital on Tap, I’m excited to continue to develop my knowledge of Capital on Tap and businesses and be a role model to the new Junior BDMs!
